IPT Community Survey information sheet

FOR PARENTS / WHĀNAU / CAREGIVERS

Greetings / Kia ora / Kia orana / Malo e lelei / Talofa lava

You have been invited by your child’s school to fill in this Inclusive Practices Community Survey. This survey asks questions about how well this school includes your child in school life and supports them to learn.
This survey is part of a set of surveys called the Inclusive Practices Tools. Your child’s school is using these surveys to help a review how well they support and include all students, and in particular, students with extra support needs.

Who is answering the surveys?

There are three different surveys for:

  • students
  • parents, whānau and caregivers
  • teachers and other people who work at school

These surveys help the school collect information from different groups of people.

You will be given an email link and asked to complete online OR you will be given a printed copy of one of the surveys.

The survey has 50 questions, and should take about 15-20 minutes to fill in.

If you have more than one child attending the school, please answer for the child you consider needs the most support with their learning.

Each survey question asks how much you agree or disagree with a sentence. You can choose one of four answers:

  • Agree strongly
  • Agree moderately
  • Agree a bit
  • Disagree

You will be able to add comments at the end of the survey if you wish. Please note these comments can be seen by the school team who are organising the surveys.

Participation is voluntary: you do not have to take part in the survey if you do not want to.

This survey is completely anonymous. No names are recorded and you will not be asked to give personal information that could identify you or your child. The survey does ask one whether you are the parent/caregiver of a student with extra support needs. This question is used to place you in a group for reporting. Reports for a group are only produced if five or more people in the group have done the survey. Your answers will be kept confidential and all data from the surveys is kept secure.

The information from the surveys is collected together into reports for the school. These reports aim to help the school think about better ways to support and include students.

Your answers to the survey will be stored in a secure online database. The Ministry of Education may request to see the data from a group of schools. No individual person or school will be identified.

What do I do next?

You will have been given an email link to the survey OR a printed copy. If you are happy to fill in the Community Survey please do the following:
Email link: Follow the link in the email and fill in the survey at a time and place that suits you. It is a one-time login and you will not be able to return to it once you have started, so you will need to set aside enough time.

Printed survey: Fill in the survey and follow the process the school has set up for you to return the survey (e.g., an anonymous drop box or return envelope).

Questions about the survey

If you find the survey raises any concerns for you, you may want to discuss these with someone you feel comfortable with at school. This could be one of your child’s teachers or a member of the senior management team.
